Why would you need to see our emergency dentist?

Emergencies relating to health are not fun. Especially when they revolve around teeth.

If you were to ask someone what they thought a dental emergency was, the majority of people would state a toothache. And while that is true, there is a lot more than just a hurting tooth that should prompt you to seek same-day treatment from a dental team.

But what exactly does a dental emergency look like?

At Quest Dental Care, we know how unnerving it can be to have a toothache or other uncomfortable dental condition, and our dentist in Ipswich can offer same-day appointments to all of our patients who come to us with a dental emergency. So, you can rest assured that you will be taken care of when you come to see our team.

But how do you know if you have a dental emergency? Our dentist in Ipswich explains below.

You have unrelenting dental pain

OK, so the main reason patients want to see our dentist in Ipswich is that they have unrelenting dental pain. That is, they have pain that is distracting them, preventing them from eating, drinking, or even sleeping.

If this sounds familiar, you need to contact our emergency team as soon as possible as it is highly likely that you have an oral abscess.

You have lost a filling or crown

If you have ever had a filling or crown fitted, then you may have at some point had one of these restoratives come loose or even fall out. Even if this is not uncomfortable, it is still a dental emergency.

Not having a filling or crown replaced as soon as possible can result in the tooth becoming infected or, in the long term, the tooth becoming more decayed.

Your mouth is bleeding

Dental bleeds can occur for a myriad of reasons.

For one thing, you may have recently had a dental extraction, or you may have had blunt-force trauma to your mouth. If you are applying pressure and the bleeding is still consistent after 20 minutes, then you need to see our team as soon as possible to prevent further blood loss.

You have swelling

Dental swelling may or may not be uncomfortable but, much like a lost filling or crown, it requires emergency treatment irrespective of whether or not it is sore.

Thus, if you notice swelling to your face, under your jaw, or towards your throat, you will need to contact our team as soon as possible to get the underlying cause diagnosed and treated.

You keep getting ulcers

Ulcers in the mouth are not uncommon, especially if you brush too hard, have been stressed or have been ill. But if you have ulcers popping up in the same part of your mouth time and time again, if they are bleeding or have grown larger than a 5-pence piece, then we need to see you and have these explored. Indeed, ulcers that keep appearing, bleed or are excessively large can be a symptom of oral cancer and, if we suspect this, we will refer you to a specialist for further diagnostic tests.
